After a narrow victory against Crystal Palace in their opening pre-season game, Chelsea suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat to Ajax last week though manager Carlo Ancelotti fielded a relatively weak line-up.
Chelsea have made just one major transfer so far this summer with Yossi Benayoun arriving from Liverpool. The Blues have kept an eye on Fernando Torres while Benfica’s Ramires is also being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
However the departures of Joe Cole and Michael Ballack mean that Chelsea are in the market for another midfielder. There were speculations that Ancelotti will have to sell before he can get funds to buy new players with Didier Drogba being a possible target for some of the top European clubs. But chief executive, Ron Gourlay said that funds are available if the Chelsea manager wants to sign more players this summer.
